MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT

Interview (2011)

"Alcohol, drugs, guns, the terrible state of humanity, etc...": please, can you give us more informations about your "interests"? As far as I'm concerned, like french dude, the guns for example are not an.. "obviousness". And do you think that drugs can help the auditor to understand completely your sound? Taking drugs is necessary when you compose new music?

Well, we like to drink and smoke for sure.  I don't think that it's necessary to be drunk or high to write or listen to our music but I'm sure they have influenced our music in many ways - probably more laziness and irresponsibility than anything else. We're still gonna drink and smoke though, because it's fun and we like to hang out and have fun.  Same with guns... I know guns are not as common in Europe as in the US but they are just there prevalent in our society and I'd rather be on the delivery end if need be.  So we like to go shoot and drink beer - you got a problem with that?! (Just kidding)  Also, the world as we know it is coming to an end.  Just look around and see what kind of a state we are in... so we're gonna be ready.

I believe you are searching a new label to do your next album with: you don't work with Translation Loss Records? If yeah, why?

I don't want to say that we don't want to work with them anymore.  It's not like we're mortal enemies or anything like that.  We have been with them from the beginning and they have been good to us.  We just want to see if anyone else is willing to work with us.  Maybe we'll get some great offer... maybe not. We have some one offs coming out on some comps (like this one) and possibly some split vinyls and whatnot in the works.  That could be our new direction until we come up with something inspiring for a new full length. I guess we'll see in the coming year.

Do you think that a band like you, in 2011, must to work again with a label? With the music business evolution, a promotion agency and a booking agency would be not enough satisfying? With the others members, you looked at already this "solution", without label?

That is an interesting question and one we talk about quite a bit. The whole "business" of making music and trying to actually make a living off of it is totally different now with the age of the internet upon us.  We have put a lot of long hours into our band because we love it and hopefully we can continue to make music and make it (financially) worth our while.  Whether we work with a label or try to go it on our own we don't really know yet.  Let's just say we're keeping our options very open right now.  We may just release our next full length by ourselves DIY style and sell it by download only on our website... who knows?

What's your opinion about the evolution of the musical industry? Some bands think that the CD/LP are obsolete... only numeric format. Many people consume music more and more quickly: two/three... or four/five new albums per week. I don't understand.. as far as you're concerned, like artist, this is not.. frustating? You work harder and better on a record... and the next week after the release, this record waits on an Ipod. With the others thousands. Really curious like evolution.

I don't blame people for sharing music online. If I find something I really like then I'll go out and buy that record.  We just hope everyone else does that as well. It is frustrating to see your work leaked online before it is even released but what the hell, I'd rather have people listening to it than not. I still think that CD's and LP's have a place in the market, but maybe just a smaller niche - a collector/enthusiast piece like a limited edition split vinyl could be worth a lot more money if everyone else just has a digital download with no artwork or anything. It will either work itself out or we'll just nuke the whole world before it has the chance. EH... either way.

You have already collaborated with Julie Christmas in the past: who had this idea? What are your memories about that? What are the feedbacks that you got on this song? Do you have already listen "The Bad Wife"?

I haven't heard Julie's new record yet but that is on my list. We toured with Made out of Babies a while back and we just got this idea about swapping guest appearances on our new records. We had a great time with those guys on the road. The track was actually really easy to put together and came out great.  We just sent our rough track ideas to her and she sent some back to us and we worked it out via internet in the studio.  It was cool as fuck and I think it became one of the most recognizable tracks on the record.  Thanks a lot Julie!  You rule!

I read on an interview that a collaboration with Today is The Day was a possibility... any news about that? What are your relation with Steve Austin? This guy at the Roadburn fest was really... mad and crazy? Yeah, I love him!

Hey! I heard the same thing! Unfortunately I don't think that will happen.  If it did it would be fecking awesome, but I know Steve is busy all the time and things have been crazy for us recently too so don't hold your breath.  We did a long tour with Today is the Day and had a great time kickin it with them, and yes - Steve Austin is mad and crazy, but he's a really cool guy.  Maybe he'll see this and want to do a collaboration?  That would be tits.

Roadburn Festival... what are your memories about your first european tour? France perhaps? Do you know some french bands?

Oh man, that was our first show in Europe EVER! It was extremely stressfull for us.  We wound up getting lost and showing up at the last minute, then unloading our gear (that we had never used before) and finding one of our guitars smashed from the plane trip.  Holy shit that was a mess. The venue and the people were amazing but our experience was a little tainted by our personal stress levels. I hope we can get back there again this year or next and make it a better experience for everyone.  Thanks so much for everyone who was there supporting us and everyone reading this. We miss being on the road but we'll be back out there this year. Peace Nyuckaz.
